Discuss Kōrero Mai: What is product analysis?

One aspect of research is something called Product Analysis.

What do you think Product Analysis is?

Why do you think designers use product analysis?

Product Analysis

Product Analysis is where designers look at real life examples of products and evaluate their good, bad and interesting features and characteristics.

This research method is used for a variety of reasons:

Speech Research - rangahau

  • to see how a product could be improved,
  • to collect and develop interesting ideas,
  • to see if there are any new ways of designing and creating something,
  • to look and see if there are any 'gaps' in the market - so the designer can create something unique and different.

Discuss Kōrero Mai: How do you analyse a product?

...what do you think about this model?
...is it a good example of a 3D model? why?
...does it look real? why?
  • Positive?
  • Minus?
  • Interesting?

Is there anything you can take from this example to help you with your own models in the future? Would this make a good VR model? Why?

Student Task:
You are to research and explore different types of 3D models. They need to examples of objects that can be created in Blender.

You can look at real examples from designers across the world or you may want to look at some models that your classmates have made in previous lessons.

Fill in a PMI for each model that you research.

Discuss Kōrero Mai: Research & model an item of kiwiana

e.g. jandals, kiwifruit, busybee, L&P bottle etc

What if... You are a tourist store owner in New Zealand. However, you have a shop with nothing in it...
  • It's time to be creative and fill out the whole store!
  • The store you own needs to contain items of kiwiana!

For this course, the store itself doesn’t need to be very complicated… At most, a single aisle is all we need.

Just a big shelf filled with jandals is fine as well.

As long as you can personalise your store and you feel proud of it, then that’s great!

For these slides, we’ll create some jandals.

While we’ll only have one item… We can make different variations of it.

Now it’s your turn to make your creativity shine…

This is all you need for your store!

A shelf, the store counter, a sign perhaps and even a small platform for displaying your current product!

We won’t need a roof or a front wall, making it easier to work around.

Ready? Kua reri? - It's your turn... Product analysis
Student Task:
Create the base for your store!

  • For roughly 10-15 minutes, make the necessary models for your shop and don't overcomplicate it.
  • If you're short on time, create a single shelf like in the picture and duplicate it to the other side.
  • Remember to save in your Model folder!

Ready? Kua reri? - Time for Blender!
Follow the video at your own pace and if there's anything you don't understand, your teacher should have the answers in the presentation slides.
