Lesson 16 - Diorama Character Beginning
Creating ideas for a character
Using tools and techniques that you have developed in this course you will:
Design and make a 3D diorama in Blender that highlights a story from your local area. This 3D environment will be used as an educational tool to teach other students in your school about your local community.
It can be linked to the natural environment, social stories or the stories of Tangata Whenua in your local community.
Think about your progress so far. Does your diorama fulfill the design brief?
Key attributes for the design brief
Your diorama must:
- Have a 3D environment created linking to your local area and story.
- Have a key character that will be animated.
- Use 3D modelling to tell the story.
- Allow the viewer to feel like they are 'inside' the story.
- Be created with the user in mind - decide who the story is for.
- Use the Blender tools and techniques that you have learned so far in this course.
Did you notice that you have not fulfilled this attribute yet:
Have a key character that will be animated.
Today you are going to use your research to generate ideas for your character(s) in Blender.
You need to:
- both types of environments?
- 3D object models to go into your environment?
Student Task:
Use your research to develop ideas for:
- characters
- animation of characters
Annotate the sketches (label & explain)
Analyse the ideas - link back to the design brief & attributes
Do the designs meet the need? are they suitable?

Blender tools & techniques - recap creating characters in Blender
When creating a character, you have to find inspiration to know what you want your character to look like.
However, sometimes it can be hard to find inspiration, especially when you don't know what it will look like.
To make things easier, there are a few things you can do...
Themes!
Themes make it a little easier to know what you want your character to look like.
A theme could either be one thing or multiple things.
What is a theme?
What themes do you think this character have?
Medieval, Low Poly, and Warrior!
These three themes define what kind of character this one is.
Your character doesn’t need to have up to three themes, but this is generally what you would do when creating a new character.
A theme can even be as simple as the word cheese!
Looking at this character, the idea is that it looks like cheese.
And that’s all you need for a theme!
Colours are very important!
Colours are very important!
Whatever colour you put on your character, you have to think of why you gave them that colour.
For example, which one of these characters looks more evil?
Preferably when creating a character, we want it to have arms, legs, body and a head. However, you can also make a character that’s different from what is suggested.
One key thing that you should remember is that the limbs will be separated from the main body, which will become important later.
Make sure that you have all of the inspirations and references that you need when creating your character!
For those who are fast or already know what they want, once you have your references, you can start doing very basic modelling.
