Discuss Kōrero Mai: Recap: Design thinking

Today we are going to focus on the prototype bubble...

Production

Producing an Outcome

Look back and review your algorithm from last week. Share with a partner. Test, trial and modify to improve the outcome.

The next stage is to produce your outcome. To do this you will be programming.

Recap - Programming Practices

Brackets

Brackets always require an “opening” bracket and a “closing” bracket to specify a segment code.

e.g '{...}', '[...]', '(...)'

Loops

Loops always require an exit condition. Usually the use of a counter is sufficient.

do { value = a * counter} while(counter < 10)

Arrays

Arrays are used to store multiple elements of the same type of data. Arrays use an index to specify which position in the array should be accessed.

Arrays start at an index of 0. e.g Names[0]

Nested Statements

You can “nest” statements inside of other statements. Such as loops inside of IF statements.

int i = 0;

do{
	if(i % 2 == 0){
		//Even Number
	}

i++;
} while(i < 10);

Here we can see that the IF Statement is placed inside of the loop. The IF statement will only occur when the loop runs.

But what if we put another IF statement inside of the existing IF statement?

This can start to get messy fast, and you should use indentation to help define statements. Indentation is the space before the line starts.

Debugging pseudocode with a pen & paper

Debugging as you go can also help with finding any errors that might affect the outcome of your project. Debugging can be done verbally by yourself or with a partner. You can also use a Pen and Paper and write down each step outcome of your algorithm.

  • Read back through your lines of code one at a time. Does it still make sense?

  • What are the expected outcomes of the code? What should be displayed?

  • Is the order of each instruction in the correct place?
